Bucharest airport hotel or an apartment near Otopeni: drive times to the terminal

In short

  • Closest to the airport: the two Băneasa-Sisești apartments, ~13 minutes by car from the departures terminal at 4 a.m. (9.7 km).
  • Flying at 5 or 6 a.m. and want to sleep until the last minute? Choose a hotel by the terminal.
  • Arriving in the evening or staying a few nights? Self check-in at any hour after 15:00, a kitchen and free private parking in Băneasa.
  • Transfer on request, for a fee. By bus or train: 35–60 minutes to the terminal.

When a hotel by the terminal is the better choice

Start with the uncomfortable part. No Arkadia apartment is in Otopeni: all five are in Bucharest, and the ones closest to the airport are in Băneasa. If you fly at 05:00 and want to sleep until the last possible minute, a hotel by the terminal is simply the better choice.

An airport hotel wins when:

  • you fly at dawn and want to wake up as late as possible, a few steps from the terminal;
  • you land late at night and move on a few hours later;
  • you only need a bed, a shower and a short shuttle, not a place to live in;
  • a free transfer matters to your budget: the Otopeni hotels that advertise one include it, while ours is arranged on request and paid separately.

If that is you, book by the terminal. The rest of this guide is for people staying at least a full night, travelling with family, or spending a few days in Bucharest.

Accommodation near Otopeni Airport: how long to the terminal, at the time of your flight

We measured the drive with Google Maps from each building to the departures terminal of Henri Coandă Airport at three moments: early morning (03:30–05:00), when you leave for a dawn flight; in light traffic; and at weekday rush hour (08:30, 17:30 and 18:00). Every route runs along the DN1.

  • Băneasa-Sisești (with terrace and with balcony, at the same address): 9.7 km. ~13 minutes early in the morning, ~14 in light traffic, up to ~20 at rush hour.
  • Băneasa Panorama Lake: 12.2 km. ~17 minutes early in the morning and in light traffic, up to ~25 at rush hour.
  • Herăstrău: 12.3 km. ~18 minutes early in the morning, ~21 in light traffic, up to ~30 at rush hour.
  • Crângași, in the west of the city: 16.3 km. ~21 minutes early in the morning, ~27 in light traffic, up to ~40 at rush hour.

For a morning flight, Băneasa-Sisești puts you at the terminal in about a quarter of an hour. At rush hour, especially in the evening, allow ten to fifteen minutes more, and rain or an accident on the DN1 can stretch any of these times.

~13 minutes to the terminal, with free private parking. See when the two Băneasa-Sisești apartments are free:

Without a car: bus 100 and the airport train

We also asked Google Maps for the public transport route, arriving at the terminal in the morning and at midday on a working day. The times include the walk to the stop and from the stop to the terminal:

  • from Băneasa Panorama Lake: bus 436 to the Parc Mogoșoaia halt, then the airport train; 35–50 minutes, depending on the time;
  • from Herăstrău: bus 301 to Aeroport Băneasa, then bus 100 to the terminal; about 50 minutes;
  • from Crângași: the M1 metro to Gara de Nord, then the airport train; about 50 minutes;
  • from Băneasa-Sisești: bus 205, then bus 442 or 100; 55–60 minutes.

For a flight before 7 a.m., public transport is not a good option: at night only the night lines are left, with long walks. Take a taxi or ask us for the transfer; by car at that hour the drive is 13–21 minutes, depending on the apartment.

Who an apartment near Otopeni Airport suits

A long layover you actually want to sleep through

The bedroom of the Băneasa-Sisești 2 apartment, with a double bed

You have ten or twelve hours between two flights. In a terminal hotel room you pay for being close; in an apartment you pay for a full night’s sleep, in a proper bedroom with its own bathroom and no hotel corridor outside the door. All five apartments have a kitchen, so you eat when you want, not when the restaurant does.

A family that needs rooms, not square metres

The living room of the Crângași apartment, with a black sofa bed and a coffee table

For a family the difference is not the distance but the number of doors. A hotel room means everyone in the same space, lights out when the youngest goes to sleep. An apartment keeps the bedroom apart from the living area.

For a larger group, Herăstrău and Crângași each have two bedrooms and sleep up to 6. Crângași is the furthest from the airport, but Crângași metro station is 370 m away, about a 5-minute walk.

At all five apartments a baby cot can be requested, for an additional charge, subject to availability.

Arriving in the evening, leaving two days later

This is where the apartment wins outright. Arrival is by self check-in at all five apartments, so the time you arrive does not depend on anyone else’s schedule. All five have a washing machine, and free private parking comes with the three in Băneasa; at Crângași and Herăstrău parking is free, on the public street.

Two days also mean you are not tied to the airport. Along the DN1, just past the city limits, Therme București is 16.6 km by road from Panorama Lake, about 21 minutes by car in light traffic: a whole day of pools if your next flight is only the day after tomorrow; we wrote separately about where to stay for a day at Therme.

And Herăstrău Park starts 280 m from the Herăstrău apartment, roughly a 4-minute walk, through the entrance on Șoseaua Nordului.

A business trip: quiet and an invoice

In the two Sisești apartments the living room is separate from the bedroom, so one person can rest while the other works, and an invoice is issued for every stay.

Transfer, check-in and check-out

A transfer to or from Henri Coandă Airport is arranged on request and paid separately. It is not included and it is not free. Several Otopeni hotels advertise a free transfer, and if that is the deciding factor, they win.

Check-in is from 15:00, at any hour after that, and check-out is by 10:00, so for a morning flight you leave whenever you need to. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested, for an additional charge, subject to availability: useful if you land in the morning and do not want to wait until the afternoon with your luggage.

It matters just as much if you are flying in for treatment with an appointment on the day you arrive. The two Băneasa-Sisești apartments are about a 15-minute walk from the Enayati Medical City campus, and we wrote separately about what a medical stay there involves.

Three stars, a certificate and an invoice: the paperwork

All five apartments are classified at 3 stars by the Romanian Ministry of Tourism, and the certificate number is shown on each property page. The detail that is easy to miss: apartments for rent are classified from 1 to 3 stars, under Order 65/2013. Three stars is the top of the category, not the middle of a five-point scale.

The operator is ARKADIA INOVATION SRL, CUI 47935937, and we issue invoices for every stay, including business stays. For an accounts department, that is the difference between “reimbursable” and “please explain what this document is”.

So: an airport hotel or an apartment?

If you fly at 05:00 and want to sleep until the last minute, book by the terminal; it is better for you, and we say so plainly. If you have a full night ahead, a family, a working week or simply the need to live somewhere rather than wait, then the ~14 minutes from Băneasa-Sisești to the terminal are a good trade: you give up a short drive and gain a whole apartment.
